PalmOS & Citrix

M

y office moved to Citrix in late 2003.  Initially, I was dismayed that this would not allow me to Hotsync my PalmOS device without use of some cunning trickery, however as it happened, setting it up such that it would work was relatively easy.  Actually, it was very easy for me: I simply asked our information technology support team to patch me up!  J  However, all that needed to be done was to install Palm’s desktop manager software to the server, then reroute my local desktop’s COM port through to the server - yes, that’s right, I’m back to using a serial port.  No USB connection for me.

However, this wasn’t too bad really, it simply meant that I had to use a serial cradle rather than a USB cradle, and since I happen to own a Palm IIIxe, and a Palm IIIc, both of which use a serial cradle, there’s no big deal here.

Once the software and COM port had been installed, the connection process is the same as it would be with a conventional local machine - Pocket Mirror and the Hotsync Manager work exactly as they should, with no trickery or funny business to deal with.

So, in summary, quite painless for me really!

Well, perhaps not so painless, since the connection is somewhat sluggish.  It connects at 9,600 baud, which is significantly slower than any other connection I have, and boy, do you notice the performance degradation!  However, it works, and I can get by with one Hotsync per day…
