Modem Users . . .

I

n this day and age of broadband connections, it is very tempting to stuff the site with large, high quality images, since they do not take long to download with a broadband connection.  Whilst Charlie and I do have a broadband connection, I believe that all web sites should be snappy to access, and I’m aware that the site is not especially quick.

There are reasons for this – mainly that the software I’m using (no names mentioned!) does rather tend to fill the code with junk.  The long delay when accessing the home page is associated with having to load the DervNav bar.

I am working on a solution so please be patient!

At the time of writing, the site is approximately 70 Mb.  Trust me: it’s not going to get any smaller!

This site has been built to be as simple as possible to browse.  I’m not a fan of going to a site, and having to wait for it to download a Flash media presentation, or a 300 Kb image.  If I want to watch a video, I’d like to download it and watch it at my leisure.  I don’t want to stream it from the remote server.  Nor do I like pop-up adverts all that much (but I won’t discount using some in the future if I need sponsorship).

We’ve just changed our Internet connection with cable, although we’re only on the slow service.

Where possible, I’ve kept image file sizes down to facilitate snappy responses.  However, since the site is hosted in California (which requires frequent visits to check up on it, heh!) you might experience some delays: the data has a long way to go!
